The 3rd Voice of Global South Summit 2024
India hosted the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit on 17 August 2024 in virtual format. This unique initiative is an extension of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision envisaging bringing together countries of the Global South to share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform across a whole range of issues.
2. India had hosted the 1st Voice of Global South Summit (VOGSS) on 12-13 January 2023, and the 2nd Voice of Global South Summit on 17 November 2023, both in virtual format. Both the previous editions of the Summit saw participation of over 100 countries from the Global South. The inputs and feedback received from the leaders of the developing countries in these two Summits was appropriately reflected in the agenda and discussions of the G-20 Summit under India’s Presidency last year, including in the G-20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration.
3. The 3rd VOGSS, had the theme of "An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future” and provided a platform to expand discussions on a range of complex challenges that continue to affect the world, such as conflicts, food and energy security crises, climate change - all of which disproportionately affect developing countries in a severe manner.
4. The 3rd VOGSS had ten Ministerial session, in addition to inaugural session at Head of State / Government level hosted by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Egypt also attended, Ministerial Sessions, namely, Commerce/Trade Ministers’ Session on "Trade for Development- Perspectives from Global South” and Foreign Ministers’ Session on "Global South and Global Governance”. During the second Foreign Ministers’ Session on "Global South and Global Governance” Egypt was represented by H.E. Mr. Abou Bakr Hefny Mahmoud, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates' Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The Ministers deliberated on a range of issues including the pressing need for reviewing multilateralism, improving access to finance and technology for the Global South, devising collective initiatives to address common challenges and strengthening collaborations among Global South. H.E. Mr. Wael Abdel Raheem, Minister Plenipotentiary, Head of Asia Department at the Egyptian Commercial Service attended the session on "Trade for Development- Perspectives from Global South”. Discussion covered supply chain integration and food security supporting MSME and the challenges faced by the international trading system.
5. While chairing the inaugural session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for unity among Global South partners to meet the aspirations of the two-third of the humanity. Prime Minister Modi stressed on the need for just and inclusive global governance, and expressed hope that the discussions would be reflected in the “UN Summit of the Future”.
